When gallstones block the cystic duct , it can lead to acute cholecystitis .

This inflammation of the gallbladder often progresses to infection with fever and prolonged abdominal pain.

The diagnosis of acute cholecystitis is made on the basis of blood tests and abdominal ultrasound (FR). The treatment consists of administering antibiotics and removing the gallbladder .
