When a patient presents to the emergency room, by himself/herself or in an ambulance, he or she is first admitted by a specialist nurse. This professional, together with a Senior Resident, determines the severity of the health problem based on the complaint of the patient and factors such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, pain.
After this assessment, a degree of urgency is assigned to the patient. This degree of urgency determines the speed with which medical care is provided and the most appropriate way to care for the patient.
