Can I do sports?

Playing moderate intensity sports is beneficial for pregnancy and childbirth, however you must adapt to your new situation. Be aware that your center of gravity has moved and therefore your risk of falling is higher.

 

Contraindications:

  • Threat of premature labor
  • Bleeding
  • Placenta previa
  • Delayed fetal growth
  • Hypertension
  • Multiple pregnancy

In some cases, in order not to overload one or another specialist consultation, you will be asked to see your attending physician first, who will arrange a consultation with a specialist at HUG for you, if required.

Sports medicine

Sports medicine is the field of medicine specialized in different medical aspects related to practicing sports.

Contrary to certain assumptions, sports medicine is not only for those who do sports at the highest level. 

The areas dealt with by sports medicine include, among others, sports physiology and biology: energy metabolism, the adaptation of the body to stress, training and over-training, fatigue and recovery, biometrics, doping, nutrition, etc.

Orthopedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Trauma Care

Mission

Mission of the Orthopedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Trauma Care Division

  • Provide care for surgery-related musculoskeletal injuries and disorders in adult patients, using surgical or conservative treatment, taking into account the services provided by other divisions of the HUG.
  • Provide care for adult patients with spinal trauma or diseases that do not involve medullary or neurological damage.
  • Provide care for adult patients with surgical injuries or disorders of the hand.
  • Provide rehabilitation and physical therapy for patients referred to the specialist Physical Medicine and Orthopedic Rehabilitation Unit.
  • Perform treatment and preventive actions for patients with sports-related musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Patients can be admitted or treated as outpatients, in an elective or emergency context.
  • The patients are given a referral consultation by their regular physician.
