Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Pediatric Nutrition is a very important specialty in Pediatrics because it relates to around a quarter of children's diseases.

Historically, it has been recognized since 1968, the year of formation of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN). At first, in concerned itself especially with gastroenterological problems such as celiac disease. It has since has grown significantly thanks to technological developments. Gastrointestinal endoscopy adapted to the child's size is the best example of this type of development.

Currently, Pediatric Gastroenterology has three components:

  1. Pediatric Gastroenterology
  2. Pediatric Hepatology
  3. The child's nutrition which includes a normal diet for newborns and children (see the recommendations of the Swiss Society of Paediatrics ) and enteral and parenteral nutrition
