The miniaturization of computerized devices and their increased autonomy is fueling a revolution in "pervasive computing". Computing is ubiquitous, and is becoming invisible. Smartwatches, smartphones, tablets, any number of sensors: we use these devices every day, and they have become indispensable. Cloud computing, which enables us to overcome limits in calculation and storage, means that these mobile devices have practically unlimited capacity.
These systems produce ever-growing quantities of data. Medical data, from computerized patient files and genomics, can potentially be combined with personal data from biosensors, information about the environment and information about behavior. The challenges are huge. They are technological, linked, for example, to the volume of data, but most of all they are scientific in nature, such as how to build the ability to interpret these data; they are ethical, such as how to protect privacy; and they are social, such as how the results should be used. Aspects related to the representation of knowledge, the persistence in time of semantics, and the interoperability of diverse sources are at the core of our work.
Interaction paradigms involving data, information and knowledge is another subject that our team studies. Although information is growing in complexity and devices are ubiquitous, interaction paradigms have barely changed. Systems are largely individual, and interaction is based on the click model, even though the mouse has been replaced by the finger. Exploration of new methods such as 3D, contactless interfaces, augmented reality with headsets or multi-user environments, the processing of dimensionality: these are all important activities that support several of our projects.
These systems progress via cycles of construction, impact evaluation and analysis, and subsequent correction. Evalab (FR) naturally complements our research and development work by bringing all the expertise and skills needed for evaluation, particularly in terms of cognitive ability, but also in terms of efficiency and security. Furthermore, Evalab is gradually becoming more open to industrial certification and branding procedures.
Our academic work is flourishing, with several studies and publications that are ongoing or in preparation, in the fields of computerized prescribing, decision-making tools and the analysis of the impact of person-machine interfaces.
