Growing old with HIV is now a reality. People who just a few years ago felt as though they had no real future, are now faced with age-related diseases.
For the HIV unit, led by Professor Alexandra Calmy, the stakes are high: it is about getting patients to adhere to long-term treatment and regular monitoring, for a disease that while no longer fatal, needs to be treated as chronic.
A new consultation has been established to standardise care and adapt to patients' expectations and needs. It is designed both for people just starting treatment and those who are encountering difficulties. Six nurses have been trained in patient education to help people cope better with their disease and to develop their skills.
