Reducing lung infections

The most common hospital-acquired infection in intensive care is ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). It results in a longer duration of mechanical ventilation, an increased length of ICU hospitalization and a higher death rate.

A program entitled GENOVAP, combining an update of best practice recommendations, staff training, development of new materials and use of a new topical antibiotic solution, has significantly reduced the occurrence of VAPs by 24 VAPs per 1000 days of ventilation to less than 8. This program received the HUG Quality Award in 2016.
