Before Hospitalization

What type of anesthesia will be used?

Whatever technique is selected, lung surgery is performed under general anesthesia. During a preliminary consultation, the anesthesiologist will give you information about this procedure along with an explanatory brochure. You must give him or her a list of the medications you are taking.

How is respiratory function evaluated?

When a lung resection is planned, it is important to assess whether the volume of the remaining lung is sufficient to ensure good quality of life. For this purpose, one or more examinations may be requested:

  • spirometry measures lung functions, i.e. air volumes and airflow
  • ergometer testing, performed while the patient is doing physical exercise, measures maximum oxygen consumption
  • ventilation/perfusion scans assess the ventilation and circulation of each lobe.

How should you prepare for your operation?

Here are some tips for the best ways to prepare for your surgery and to reduce the risk of complications:

  • if time permits, it is advisable to stop smoking at least three weeks before the operation. If there are only a few days before the operation, do not stop smoking because bronchial secretions increase right after quitting.
  • do regular physical exercise. For example, walk every day for at least one hour or do breathing exercises with a special device provided to you by the Division.
  • do not hesitate to ask your surgeon all the questions you may have in connection with your treatment or operation.
